First full day of competitions and we had to make the 140-mile journey to the Snow Park, where slopestyle, halfpipe and a few other events are located. But our target was slopestyle. It was the women’s snowboard qualifiers and we did a dry run for the final Sunday morning.

We all got up at 4:30 to make the 6pm bullet rain to the venue. It was a very nice ride except they kept flashing the plummeting outside temperature: 12 degrees F, then 10, 6, –2, –6, and then finally, –10.

And windy.

My colleague Emily Rhyne took this selfie when she was shooting near the top of one of the jumps.

Back at it again this morning. It’s warmed up nicely though, –1 degrees, –14 windchill.

How do you even dress for those temperatures? There aren’t enough layers. How many hours did you have to stand outside in that weather? Whatever it was I’m sure it was tooooo many! Stay safe. ❤️

  2. Stay safe and hopefully warm. Seems unfair to everyone that it’s so cold!

  3. … an icy cold stare.

  4. Watching women’s slope style where are you? At the bottom ( I hope 😆)

  6. How long did the bullet train take for the 140 miles?

Super cool selfie pic, but ridiculous that it’s THAT cold. Brrr!!! On the news the other day they were saying it was 40° something in Beijing, maybe you could start covering events there?

  8. Brr; love the ice eyebrows on your colleague!
(What’s the reaction been to the torch in the snowflake at opening ceremony? Seemed to minmize the moment; miss the cauldron.)
The Fear Project worthy of a Pulitzer.

  9. Emily’s frozen brows and lashes confirms I could never do your job , Joe. And there aren’t a sufficient number of clothes to EVER keep my warm. Please be safe at those temps.

Joe’s colleague, the world-famous White House photographer Doug Mills, taught him to tape pocket warmers to his back, over his kidneys. I hope they used that trick.
