Same Ocean, Different Beach

There comes a point at the Games when the heavy lifting is just about over and one can safely set his sights on getting back to the US of A. I get to see Anne for the first time in a month (FaceTime not included) and I’ll get to see my dad for the first time in nearly six weeks. Read more

Call Me ZZZZZZé

These are things you will find lying around the NYT office in Barra. If you look at the possible combinations, it all makes sense. Peanut butter and Nutella? That works. Water to help swallow the Advil. Advil because you had too much Chivas. Nescafe because you had too much Chivas. Advil because you mixed the wine and the Chivas. If you can think of any other combinations, please feel free to share with the rest of us. Read more

Ham and Cheese Omelet at 3 p.m.

No stadium is more electric than when Usain Bolt is running the 100. No one is interested in seeing an upset. The crowd wants to see Bolt and the crowd wants to see Bolt win. And he never disappoints. Read more

Spaghetti Bolognese at 3 a.m.

I need a haircut.

But I don’t really know where to get that done because I have worn out a path between the office, the pool and gymnastics — and occasionally my hotel. The same appears true for the upcoming opening ceremony party at #2 sister’s house. Read more

Call Me Zé

Welcome back friends, the Blog has landed in Rio.

The 2016 version promises to be a lively one if for no other reason than, well, we are in Rio de Janeiro!

I mean how bad can this be? Sure, we might want to stay away from Guanabara Bay, maybe avoid a favela or two, but this is the land of samba, caipirinhas and the most stunning coastal scenery you can imagine: Its soaring granite peaks give way to miles of white sandy beaches inhabited by Cariocas in an endless parade of Speedos and thongs.

Welcome to Rio! Read more

Do Svidaniya

I am back in the Land of Flavorful Food.

Although to be fair, when we managed to wander outside of the official Olympic bubble we had some tasty dishes. The two Georgian restaurants rank at the top of the list, but be prepared to spend hours waiting for their delicious offerings. The price of having just-prepared goodness, I guess. Read more
