Opening Ceremony

This is my fifth Olympics but last night was my first live Opening Ceremony. It was quite the spectacle. As much as it was a feast for the eyes, the sound of it all was beyond description; a constant pulse of drumbeats. Incredibly loud without being overwhelming.

The Swiss, the Beau, the Hangout

The days are flying by and the torch will be lit before you know it.

The sun is out!

On Friday, the House of Switzerland ski jumped into my neighborhood. They have indoor space in Glaziers Hall, a riverfront building next to London Bridge, and spread their Red Zone into part of Southwark Cathedral’s churchyard. Read more

Olympic Park

Olympic Park, home to many of the venues, the MPC (main press center), the IBC (international broadcast center) and very soon, many thousands of spectators.

The 500-acre park is also home to the athletes’ village and the Orbit, an art installation that will likely see some of the longest lines of the Games. The jury is out on whether the Orbit itself is worth looking at but the views from the top of it are said to be spectacular: both of the park and the city skyline in the distance.

We’ve Been Evicted

Yes, our familiar and comfortable home that we have enjoyed since the Beijing Games has been completely and irrevocably shuttered. So, as Leah2012 is so graciously welcoming us to her beloved London, I am welcoming you to our new address: eatatjoesblog.com.

Welcome to London all! Including athletes and coaches who have started arriving over the past couple of days.

After some weeks of mainly talking about the Queen and the weather, now Londoners and Brits are talking about the Olympics and the weather. And the Union Jack is still flying all over the place. At least the Olympic-related topics can give everyone a break from the age-old favorite gripe with Mother Nature. But you still hear a lot of the usual: Why did the weather have to be so amazing in May? Could June have been any worse? July isn’t looking much better so far. Read more
