Stuck in the Mountains

If you’re going to be “stuck” somewhere, this is the place.

On Thursday we traveled up to the Snow Park in Zhangjiakou to shoot the men’s halfpipe final on Friday. Saturday was an off-day from shooting anything live. Got to sleep until about 9. Then worked in our mountain office on things for later this week.

The original plan was to head back to Beijing on Sunday but plans changed and we decided to stay up in the mountains to shoot women’s freestyle slopestyle on Monday.

Then came the snow. A little on Saturday and a steady snow on Sunday, postponing the slopestyle qualification until Monday and the final to Tuesday. That will mean shooting that Tuesday morning and then heading right back to Beijing to shoot women’s figure skating short program Tuesday night.

Chinese snow removal.

Our office and rooms up here are in a resort, so it’s all really nice. I just spend my days hanging out at the beach watching the Olympics.

Who’s bringing the Mai Tais?

And robot sanitizers.

Here are some things we’ve published at the Games so far.

I took this sequence of Shaun White’s second run, the last full Olympic run before retiring from Olympic competition. Thankfully, no crampons needed to get to the broadcast platform above the stands. Just a lot of stairs.

The resort looks really nice! I hope you were able to find someone to bring you a Mai Tai. Was the water warm? 🙂
I was watching the skiing last night, it was like a white out. Hopefully you don’t get too much snow, it could take a while to clear the roads. Though, it might not be bad to be stuck at the resort even longer.
As always, incredible work by you and the Times crew!!

The extreme skiing/snow boarding venues look amazing! I’m guessing that all of the venues there, unlike some past Olympics, were completed well before they were needed to be, and they are, in the words of Thurston Howell III of Gilligan’s Island fame, “top notch.”

It’s so weird to have Winter Olympics events postponed because it’s snowing in a place where they don’t usually get snow!?! What is the food situation at the resort? Have you been able to find some GF options?

So interesting to read and see how tricks are accomplished in the events. Can’t imagine how y’all bring it together.
Any chance you can sneek that sanitizing robot home in your luggage?
