A Little Something I’ve Been Working On
The Winter Olympics are far more dangerous than the summer version. Everything is competed on snow and ice — mostly ice. Rock-hard ice. We interviewed 36 athletes in the most dangerous sports to see if what they do scares them. Or are they just daredevils, fearless.
The answers were unanimous. They’re afraid. Everyone of them.
In the coming days I’ll fill you in on our months-long project, from a glacier in Switzerland to the ski jumps of Lake Placid to the slopes of Colorado and Utah. In the meantime, Below is a trailer of our big Olympic project for these Games. And here is the link to the pieces: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/sports/olympics/athletes-winter-injuries.html

Awesome! I’m scared just watching from my couch!
Very scary!
Yikes!
Hi Joe,
I love this blog — amazing what you see, how you have insight into the athletes and how you describe their psychology. Also loved the robots at the Hotel!
I will Eat at Joe’s with enthusiasm!
Love and luck,
Marcy
Sweet!! You’re kinda a big deal. Think I could get your autograph sometime? 🙂
Nice to finally see the fruits of all your labors. Looking forward to more. Spectator Wannabe, I was promised no skiing down big dangerous scary hills… though he did pack crampons so I don’t know what that means !?!
The “You’re kinda a big deal” comment rocks!
Happy New Year! Wow! This is really amazing material beautifully presented! In solidarity with our Olympians have sustained an ankle fracture after once again falling on local black ice, but I guess you’ve “got to break the egg to make the biscuit”.
Thus in solidarity with you, am upping scrambled egg intake, as well.
Since the athletes are, admittedly, scared and you’ve witnessed events and interviewed athletes, which one do you think would be the scariest?
I really thought this was gonna be about Archie trying to climb up a hill. Can we get a refresher on that? … Great stuff, though. Can’t wait.
loved the video , impressed they admitted to being fearful. I’d be terrified , hence I ” do ” the Olympics from my living.room. Joe , I was in Cape Porpoise on Wednesday ; what a lovely place . .
Very Cool!
CTJANDA Is there going to be an opening party tonight? Is the icy snowy weather affecting plans?
I was going to celebrate with my sisters (arrival delayed until tomorrow) Chinese take-out and dark ‘n stormys. Now it will just be me ‘n Rocco, sharing chicken fun noodles. 😻🥰
Annie, yes! I wish we had dark n stormys but we will be doing Chinese takeout and maybe a little wine! Julia is working on the Olympic Rings of m&m’s on the cake as we speak. In very Aunt Anne tradition she organized the bag by color first! Hopefully the Albarino’s will be able to get here later for the festivities. They’re planning to try at least. Enjoy the evening with Rocco!!
What are dark ‘n stormys? I feel like I might enjoy them?
I love seeing the different uniforms at the opening ceremony. France was distinctive—Columbia-edgy! Joe, we’re you able to see the opening ceremony and Putin in the stands? Cousin Jane
