Gamsahamnida, Korea
I left Pyeongchang this afternoon in a snowstorm and can’t wait to land in sunny Hawaii. I’m trading in my snow pants for shorts, my windchill for just being chill and my Olympic torch tornadoes for mai tais. Annie, I’ll meet you on the beach. That’ll be me asleep under the umbrella.
But before I bid a final farewell to Korea, here are a few thoughts and photos.
I’ve said it before, there are really only two things we really need to make us happy at the Olympics: good wifi and dependable transportation. Good food and lodging are a nice bonus.
In the land of Samsung and LG, there is free wifi everywhere. Every bus, every train, every place. And for all the crazy karaoke buses, they were nothing if not prompt. If a bus was scheduled to leave at 6:20, then you had until 6:20:59. But once the clock struck 6:21, it was gone. If you were 30 seconds late running for the bus, all you saw were taillights. We are still waiting for some Rio buses.
My room was great and only steps away from the main press center, a first for me in eight Olympic attempts.
And the food was outstanding, especially because I managed to stay clear of Chang on certain nights. There are plenty of photos of my meals below: BBQ, Udon noodles and bibimbap. (To be honest, I could really go for a ham and cheese on rye about now.)
The photo at the top was one of the favorites I made. I spent a night off shooting at ski jumping because it is such a cool sport to photograph. There is another one or two in the slideshow below.
If I ever wake from under the umbrella, I will get you another post from Kuaia. But until then, thank you all for spending the last two weeks with Eat at Joe’s, and a special thanks to those who found the time to liven up the comment section. That’s really where the fun is.
Many comments were questions for me, so I apologize if they went unanswered. I just assumed they were all rhetorical! 🙂

Awesome pictures! I still think I would have starved there, or maybe I would have just been on a liquid diet at the Czech house. My invite to Hawaii must have gotten lost in the mail, so please drink a few mai tais for me. 😊 Have a wonderful, fun and RELAXING trip with Anne!! ❤️
Thanks Amy! You would have liked the BBQ. I didn’t think you would want to miss school to come to Hawaii. Next time!
You know, I try to get these posted before people wake up back in the States, but you get up so damn early!
Wow great pictures! The food looks great…minus the peanut butter dipped squid of course. Glad it was a successful Olympics. Thank you bringing us such entertaining (and sometimes gross) stories once again! I don’t know about everyone else but I certainly wouldn’t object to a post-Olympics Hawaiian themed blog post 😬 Have a great time!!!
Ok. About to board. I like going through a gate that says Honolulu!
School or Hawaii, hmm….tough choice. I have personal days to use up!!!
I’m glad that you have finally realized that I DO get up early and I’m not always sleeping, like you used to think!
Safe travels!
Such great pictures! Looking forward to beach themed ones in a few days- after you’ve gotten some sleep. What a great change- to have a nice room, good wifi and good transportation all at the same Olympics! Thanks for taking us along for the ride (at least in spirit). Hope you and Anne have a wonderful time in Hawaii and get lots of rest.
I was thinking about the Nunans tradition earlier this week. I’m sure they’ll love it!
Beautiful photos , Joe ! Hope you are warming up right now in Hawaii .
Don’t forget to use sunscreen!
Ok Someone, thanks for the reminder. If we ever see the sun, I’ll be sure to use it. 5 days of clouds and rain so far!
