There’s a Party Goin’ On
Just as the Times has its traditional dinner the night before the opening ceremony, the Albarinos and Yusteins have their own bash on ceremony night. The menu is home-country inspired and flags adorn the walls. They were kind enough to share some photos with E@J. Looks like a nice spread with some very nicely decorated “Torch” cupcakes. No sign, however, of Olympic Torch Tornadoes.
I had a bit of a rest day today. Spent most of it in the warm office. The very cold temperatures have returned, as has the wind. I am supposed to be going to the men’s downhill tomorrow but there is a lot of talk about postponing it because the wind could make the jumps too dangerous. I am really hoping that if they postpone it, they will do it before I spend too many frigid hours standing on the icy slopes. It was pretty slick there the other day so I will be bringing the crampons this time around.
Kinda like a snow day, I would prefer to know the night before!
In case you haven’t noticed #2 sister’s comment on the previous post, or glanced at my twitter feed on the right side of this page, my girl Reese Witherspoon tweeted a shoutout to our interactive Olympic preview pieces.

Very impressive star shout out! Equally as impressive as your drinking proficiency in your last post (I’m a little late on that one but I’m in awe of your talent!) Hope you don’t have to spend too much time in the cold today. Maybe a few more tornadoes will help. The work may suffer but it will keep you warm! We had a good opening ceremony party but we have a long list of countries we’d like to use for our celebratory meal and the IOC is not cooperating with us.
Ed was pretty impressed that you’re on a first name basis with Reese!!!
I agree with Trisha about keeping warm from the inside and having some more Tornadoes or even some Pilsner Urquell! It usually makes for a more entertaining story if you don’t have the crampons, so if you happen to forget them, we probably wouldn’t mind. 🙂
Fun opening ceremony party as always, and none of the food was still breathing! We missed having Tracy there to identify every single flag in the parade of nations! (Who needs Katie Couric?) I hope South Korea has rescue St. Bernards if you venture out…if not, I recommend a phone and a flask. Your new BFF Reese will be in constant touch, I’m sure!
T of CTJANDA deserves a gold medal for presentation and cleverness: The torch cones and fruit rings a standout. I have a feeling JANDA helped, so a Silver for the whole team, including sister#2 for decorations.
Love the Oly rings, and they weren’t even made of calamari or octopus or other seafood. Stay warm my friend…
Joe, it just occurred to me that you have a history of faceplanting into the snow after a possibly less-than-graceful fall from a ski lift. Perhaps add a seat belt or maybe a bungee cord to your pack o’essential supplies. (Not sure Reese is aware of THAT move, bro.)
Downhill postponed today because of wind. I may be the happiest man in Korea. We found out just after getting off the bus at the venue. OMG the windchill was brutal. Doug Mills took his gloves off for a few minutes to take some shots of the whipping flags. I’ll leave out the expletives, but his hands “have never been this cold. They’re burning.”
And this isn’t his first rodeo!
And this was at the bottom of the mountain. So glad I didn’t have to stand out in that for several hours near the top, which is where my prime spot was.
it may even give me time to post another piece to E@J.
As soon as I thaw out!
I’m going to show your comment to Uncle Donald who, as you know, says you haven’t felt real cold until you’ve been cold in Korea! Sixty-odd years later, and he still remembers that cold!
I’ll never forget how cold it is here. They say it feels colder here because of the humidity.
