I Was Right About Chang
Thanks to everyone who offered birthday wishes. Because of the time difference, I figured my birthday lasted about 14 hours longer than usual. And it coincided with the Times’s traditional pre-Olympics dinner. Chang Lee, you might remember from the first post, was put in charge.
Dinner was fantastic — about 20 courses of authentic Korean fare. This great picture by Becky Hanger does it some justice. (I wonder if the Yustein-Albarino party table will look like this?) The dinner started with heukimjajuk, a black sesame porridge, and ended with sujeonggwa, a ginger and cinnamon tea. He explained everything we were eating and I believe none of it was alive at the time of consumption. All a big plus.
But what you might also remember is that during our preflight “breakfast,” Chang regaled me on the many ways one could enjoy a tornado, that soju-beer concoction. During dinner, Chang demonstrated the proper technique for downing an Olympic Torch Tornado.
Terri Ann Glynn, who is the sports department manager, and who somehow managed to get us all to Korea, was also celebrating her birthday. She managed to escape the tornado but after dinner she and I both got a cake. She then led the parade to karaoke near our hotel, but I had to beg off. I had to get up at 5:30 to get to a very early photographers’ briefing for figure skating down at the coast. Just as well because Terri Ann is an amazing singer, and I, well, I can do Olympic Torch Tornadoes!

Wow!! Applause, Applause!!!!
Teresa (Eddy and Amy’s cousin)
And, Happy Belated Birthday!
You get a gold for tornado-ing! Great technique, especially the chin work. We’re very proud. 😊 I’m pretty sure you would not have medaled in karaoke (did the nuns tell you not to ever sing? Kind of a family tradition), so the pass was probably a good decision. What an amazing way to celebrate a birthday. We may not be serving tornados at the Opening Ceremony party tonight (at the CTJANDA venue), but we will certainly offer a toast to you, your birthday, and the exciting moments you share with us. 고맙습니다 (Thank you!)
Wow! Well done! You’ll be on the podium when drinking tornadoes becomes an Olympic event.
Until then, you may be under the podium!
Nice job, probably brought back memories of “Shotgun” beers up at The Fields!
1 tornado and the guy has to “beg” off. Pretty lame story about a photo meeting. Lets get these games going. Hopefully figure skating will be done soon. That would be a lot more fun to watch if they had sticks or rocks on the ice.
No mention as to how to soju-beer concoction tasted — as to determine whether there will be more in your future??
That’s exactly what I was wondering Annie! There were no odd faces made to make it look like it tasted bad. Maybe you should go for the gold by being the Times member to consume the most. I’m also very glad to hear that nothing in your meal was still alive!
Joe, if that’s soy sauce marinated eggs I spy, how were they? Tell Chang I’m going to need some recipes.
YOU GOT A TWITTER SHOUTOUT FROM REESE WITHERSPOOON!!
😳
Happy Belated Birthday Joe! Are you sure that was your first “tornado”?
Yes, but maybe not my last. Thanks for the birthday wishes
Hey E@J I see the downhill is postponed due to wind. How cold/windy does it have to be to make the call? ❄️❄️💨💨💨💨
On the bus to DH. Minus 12 windchill. Hoping they call it off. The windchill on this bus is about the same. Toe and hand warmers at the ready.
