Live Party Blog
I know there is a Maple Street bash going on and the caipirinhas are flowing. If there are any other parties taking place we’d love to hear from you and send pictures to my email account and I will post them.
And if there is no party planned, there is no reason that you can’t have an impromptu drink or two. At last night’s Times party, they eventually ran out of cachaça (they didn’t know who they were dealing wth), but they substituted vodka and that seemed to work just fine.
The ceremony has already started but NBC wants to make you wait. I’ll pass along ome tidbits but will try not to spoil any fun. I can tell you this, the Portuguese discover Rio de Janeiro.
Check out the photos from #2 Sister’s party. Let the comments begin.

Declan’s first, with Adam and Julia

That’s a good looking caipirinha

Looks like what I’m eating.

The Michigan version. Ready to go.

Patricia’s Brazilian chocolate truffles. Delicious, I hear.

Caipirinhas do Norte (gin & tonics)

John and Connie Filzen enjoying the sunset in Delaware! Enjoy!

Oh my! the Kelley-Stewpanema’s are enjoying the ceremony. Zé is blushing.

Did you know the Brazilians think they invented the airplane?
The athletes are about to come in. Each one gets a seed of a tree and a little bit of soil, which they will plant and form something called the Athletes’ Forest. There will be 207 species, one for each delegation.
We think (after a couple of caipirinhas) that they should set up the Redeemer – put a phone in his hand to take a selfie!
The Americans will enter with the “E” contingent — Estados Unidos. Greedy NBC asked that they go with the U’s because hey were afraid everybody in the US would turn it off after USA marched in. Surprisingly, the IOC said no.
Love the idea of the seeds and the Athletes’ Forest!
Partying in Michigan?
NBC is ridiculous! (Sorry, Patricia – not Matt) I agree with Joanne – the forest idea is wonderful.
Emailed you a picture
Ze:
We just tried to email you a photo of the party excitement here in Brooklyn. Sent it to comment-reply@wordpress.com. Hope you receive!
Is there any update on the snakes?
Your fans, The Kelley-Stewpanema’s
Maur . . . oops, Astrid, don’t know if i will get that. I emailed you my address. send it there.
Something to toast, FINALLY, FINALLY, the 2016 Olympics have begun. (Two years in the making!)
Hope you are all checking out the new photos. NY, Maine, Michigan, Delaware and Brooklyn (it deserves its own mention) are represented.
Sarah Lyall, from the Times’s own live blog (she worked in the London bureau for many years).
Demonstrating their well-known penchant for wearing whatever is lying around on the floor, the British athletes are wearing very strange shirt/jacket-and-white-shorts combos.
Great pictures home with two dogs Donna at North American Scrabble tournament
Welcome aboard Dave.
zé, what are you eating & drinking tonight?
Having a Skol (a not-so-good) Brazilian beer. And some pretty good beef stew from the cafeteria. A quiet evening in the office watching the ceremony. Just the way I like it.
Well, all quiet in the Midwest. Looks like we don’t take our Olympics as seriously as the East Coast. Guess I will have to work on my synchronized swimming in the pool tomorrow;-) Photos to follow, I think not. Be safe. Try to find a little time for work.
While I was waiting for C and D teams to parade, I took a look thru “The Fine Line” interactives ZE worked on. Another reason to toast, nicely done!
Just to keep everyone up to date. Final from Detroit. Tigers 4 Mets 3
Will try to get a post up later but any thoughts on the OC? Are Patricia and Emma hungover?
OC: a good excuse for a party. You probably had to be there. Thank goodness for some of the African and Asian teams for their lively and interesting outfits. Too many blazers and ties!
p.s. We loved the Tonga flag-barers!!
Ha! I get it, Flag-BARErs.
Hey!
Not hungover as I had to make the arduous journey back to Monroe last night. A certain young lad in my care could not stay awake until the US came out so we left the party fairly early but DVR’d it and watched the rest this morning (until it cut off shortly before the end). I was quite underwhelmed by the OC but the party, food and company were enjoyable! We started discussing Korean food too! Looking forward to the good stuff now, just hoping I can watch some of it between cartoons, potty training and bed time!
Sure looks nice there! Hope you’re enjoying!
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
if you have the opportunity to watch the video of the male gymnast break his leg on the vault, DON’T!!!
I know the Chinese set the bar for OC very high, but this wasn’t even in the same zip code as that bar. Honestly, I think I’m just not cultured enough to enjoy the symbolism. Just give me some nice song and dance! I, like Anne, enjoyed some of the colorful and interesting outfits. I am currently in the wilds of New Hampshire, supervising Tracy and Nick’s move to their new Little House on the Mountain. (Supervisors do very little manual labor.) I am hoping that there is an NBC affiliate somewhere up here so I can watch tonight. Ed, I was just about to watch the vault video! Thank you for the warning.
Wow! Rachel Maddow tweets how the NYT interactive on Simone Biles is so cool!!!
Cool. Thanks Michigan sister. At the pool waiting for swimming to start.
We are watching TV, looking for you, and Michigan Sister said to look for white hair. She might need to be removed from this site if her rudeness continues.
Should have listened to the public service announcement…gross!
Will there be any interactive graphics on that French gymnast destroying his leg on the vault? Maybe something that would have a 360° view or a cool X-ray superimposed?!
I’m not above clickbait, O Vyse One
I’m impressed that Michigan sister knows what a tweet is! (Congrats though, Zé…I will look for the interactive.)
Found it. As often happens, I agree with Ms. Maddow!
sorry for the lack of posts. kinda been mayhem for the first few days. i’ll catch you up soon. women’s gymnastics this afternoon, katie Ledecky tonight. hope to have time tomorrow. follow me on twitter if you’d like. excuse typos #2 sister
No typos noted, ee cummings! I came on here to give you a hard time about neglecting us, but then I saw your incredibly cool stuff on Lochte. You’re forgiven. You’re welcome. 🙂
Welcome back ze. I was thinking of calling ze-ro with your lack of posts. Stay out of the green water!
Well, I did TERRIBLY on your guess their sport quiz!!! 3/16. Fun to try though.
It was a lot of fun! I did terribly too (although slightly better than you, Joanne). I’m a big fan of the Olympic and Paralympic men taking their clothes off however, so the score was secondary to the eye candy.
You’re still there, right? You didn’t defect to the Amazon basin or anything? Just checking.
im here. what day is it?
In the real world, it’s Thursday, August 12th. In your world, it’s day around Day 15 of Little Sleep.
I was siting at steak and shake waiting for Andrew and Aaron to show up. I started the guess the Olympic bodies test while I waited for the boys. I was so in grossed in the test I didn’t see them walk in. Aaron right away knew I was on the NYT page and said u showed him this graphic. I am so glad they meet with you, it has sparked Aaron’s interest…..finally!! I also love reading ur sisters replies!!! Sounds like the Heed girls without the yelling. As you sister so nicely put it, I watch the sidelines for the gray hair too!!
Hi Chris, thanks for commenting. Was nice to meet the boys and happy they enjoyed the trip to the Times. I do have a question for you and # sister: Ryan Lochte has white hair too, how come you guys aren’t mistaking him for me?
Let me count the ways…youth, muscles, doesn’t hold his nose when he jumps into the pool, youth, muscles, it may be white but there is a lot more of it, youth, muscles, no blow-up swimmies during his races, youth, muscles….aren’t you glad you asked?? 🙂
