Opening Ceremony Preparations

Practice for the opening ceremony has been going on this week and despite pleas from the organizers, those in attendance have been tweeting out all the secrets. So much so that a scene with Gisele Bündchen has been cut because of it.

The same appears true for the upcoming opening ceremony party at #2 sister’s house. This picture of two young volunteers frantically playing with scissors trying to get the Olympic rings ready was leaked to E@J’s. A spokesperson for the organizers said in an email that the children were being closely supervised. Unnamed sources, however, confirm that the children appear to have been left alone while the supervisor scanned random blogs for grammatical errors. E@J’s has learned the first names of the children: the girl is said to be Julia and appears happy; but the young boy, Adam, seems to be signaling for help. Some have speculated that the circle he is holding is not an Olympic ring, but rather part of an S.O.S. distress signal.

Speaking of distress, I’d like to share an email we all received today from The Times’s local fixer/translator. She scans the local news for highlights. I know there have been many stories about the dangers of Brazil, but I would like to direct your attention to the last item. Ok, now I’m worried!

  • Military forces being redirected from Rio to Natal (northeastern Brazil) to control a wave of gang violence, which included burning buses and cars. Gov thinks it’s because they blocked cell phone signals in prisons.
  • Rumors surfaced that at the opening ceremony rehearsal, Gisele Bündchen (representing the Girl from Ipanema) was either being mugged or being sold a bikini. Either way, Globo is reporting that the scene was cut.
  • Traffic has been awful with the opening of the Olympic lanes. Locals are taking their complaints to social media. The mayor decided to make another holiday on Thursday. There will now be four holidays — more than during Carnaval.

(Editorial interjection: I for one am quite satisfied with the Olympic lanes. On our 40-minute journey to work during the morning rush, we have a wide-open lane that lets us zip past those locals stuck in traffic.)

  • Employees at the Olympic village complain about the long lines and bad, expensive food and untrained workers.

(Editorial interjection, Part II: I agree, there should be an Olympic food lane for small-time bloggers.)

  • Look out for wild animals like sloths, boa constrictors, cobras, caimans, anteaters and caipivaras at the Olympic venues, especially golf and around Deodoro. There is a team to control the wild animals at the venues, coordinated by a biologist.

(Editorial interjection, Part III: BOA CONSTRICTORS! COBRAS! And the pro golfers stayed home because of mosquitos???)

Well that just put all of our minds at ease as to your safety and health down there! Thanks for that! (Also the safety of my children, now questionable. Clearly left in the wrong hands yesterday).
    Awesome pictures though!!

Yes, I agree with Rose 9921 that you just made our list of things to worry about MUCH longer.

Ok, Ok, not to worry. I won’t be going to Deodoro or the golf.

Copababe, I shudder at the thought (as should everyone) of bikinis on Maple Street! And while we’re shuddering…snakes?? SNAKES??? The Ward family does not abide those slithering [expletive deleted] creatures. Not a herpetologist among us. I would also like to point out that NO children were harmed at Grandma’s School of Olympic Crafts. Adam is very excited about the Olympics, by the way, although due to his tender age, he has no idea what they are about. We are very ready for the opening ceremony party! The menu is set, starring Brazilian food from my new “Brazilian Kitchen” cookbook (shoutout to my friends Rich and Rodrigo for the book!), the construction paper rings are ready, the cachaça is waiting to be mixed with fruit to make caipirinha (always fun to watch Patricia get loopy on alcohol!), and the TV is dusted off. Only snake repellent remains to be purchased, although it’s probably odd that gang violence seems to be far less scary to us than poor food and vermin. Let the games begin!

What Copa said…great story today! By the way, I just read (in another news source, unfortunately) that if you sleep with a live chicken in the room, mosquitos will clear out immediately. Since you have a close history with fowl, this might be an option for you. Don’t bother to thank me…I’m here to help. Mé

No Jamie Oliver restaurants around? I bet there would be something there to satisfy your thirst, even if you had to wait for food.

Hey NotInvited, no Jamie Oliver restaurants but a pretty good food scene near our hotel. And thankfully they stay open late because that is usually when we get there. Celebrated a colleague’s birthday party at a steakhouse last night (steak and caipirinhas, that is). Maybe I’ll touch on that in the next post, but it may have to wait a bit. Very busy all day today working on a Phelps piece, then heading to women’s gymnastic practice at 5:30, which then butts right up against our traditional Times dinner/party that we have on the Thursday before the opening ceremony. So, you see, with all this work and partying, I just don’t have time for you guys!! I’m sure you all understand.

This puts us pretty low on the priority list…Phelps, gymnastics, a party, and then probably something stupid like an attempt to sleep. I’m not sure it’s acceptable.

I don’t think we’re paying you to party down there, we’re paying you to entertain us for three weeks. Let’s get blogging!
*please disregard the fact that we aren’t actually paying you.

Practice, we’re talking in about practice. I don’t think you can talk about women (girls) gymnastics and butts in the same sentence. Let’s get these games started. I can only watch so much soccer at once. Though if you could find Alex Morgan or the New Zealand goalie, pictures would be appreciated!!!

Hi Folks, still cranking on the Phelps thing, but here is a look at the Times’s operation here, by the numbers. YOu can even see me in the background. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/08/04/insider/05-Insider-Numbers.html?smid=tw-nytsports&smtyp=cur

That was very interesting! It does not, of course, relieve you of your blog duties, but that’s a staggering amount of preparation (and money, I would think) that went into this operation. I was a little afraid to look for you in the picture, but thanks be to God, you weren’t in a Speedo!

Wow! The logistics of managing all of that must be a huge undertaking. One car!!! Must be like the clown cars at the circus that hold lots of people. Enjoying all the articles, pictures and tweets.

All is going well! Emma and Patricia are definitely fans of the caipirinha! On the menu are grilled ribs, cheese bread, Brazilian rice, grilled pineapple, and a couple of desserts I can neither spell nor pronounce. I posted pictures on Facebook, but I don’t know how to put them on here. Rumor has it that there is a similar party taking place in Michigan, at Casa Fornusek.
