Leah Welcomes Us
Torrents, travel, tourists, tickets and trainers (sneakers)
Welcome to London all! Including athletes and coaches who have started arriving over the past couple of days.
After some weeks of mainly talking about the Queen and the weather, now Londoners and Brits are talking about the Olympics and the weather. And the Union Jack is still flying all over the place. At least the Olympic-related topics can give everyone a break from the age-old favorite gripe with Mother Nature. But you still hear a lot of the usual: Why did the weather have to be so amazing in May? Could June have been any worse? July isn’t looking much better so far.
And don’t get anyone started on the 2012 logo or the official mascots.
People in London are trying to plan their commutes to get to work, choosing to work from home, or arranging earlier or later shifts with managers. Some locals are packing bags and locking up valuables, choosing to rent out their homes for a couple or a few weeks. Everyone is asking everyone about tickets – how many secured, how much paid. Visitors are lining up accommodations, as well as Brits from around the country who have been assigned to work or volunteer in London. And we volunteers are getting used to our uniforms – my favorite item being the sneakers! (I will switch to gray or white laces after Gamestime.) I will report for duty at my first shift at 6:15am on Saturday, July 28th for the Cycling Road Race. And the volunteers have been given tickets to the Dress Rehearsal for the Opening Ceremony on July 25th.
Earlier this month, Transport for London updated signs and maps in the Underground, train and bus stations and added new pink signage to point people towards Games venues. Some stations will become entrance-only or exit-only at certain times of day. Most people are predicting major delays to their usual commutes. Luckily I’ll still be able to walk to the office in about 20 minutes.
On Saturday I made a quick trip out to Stratford to run some errands at the new-ish Westfield mall adjacent to the Olympic site. On the way I met two college students who are volunteer drummers in the Opening Ceremony, heading to rehearsal. They are music students and are exhausted from rehearsals in the rain, saying they do a lot of waiting around in the stadium. Apparently Danny Boyle is a really nice guy and they are happy to be able to put this on their résumés.
I didn’t stay long at the mall, having forgotten that summer sales are going on, so lines were long everywhere. I got close to the site but not close enough for any decent pictures, and it was raining, but you will see plenty of pictures soon, hopefully in better weather.
And fortunately it wasn’t raining last night when I walked past the 2nd most photographed structure in London with its new lights and rings.
Safe travels Joe and Amy, good luck at the airport, and can’t wait to see you!

Thanks Leah. Here we come!
Leah, what a spectacular welcome to the blog! SO interesting and informative, and great pictures. Your addition to the “staff” is a wonderful gift! On NBC Nightly News last night, Brian Williams said, “It’s been raining in London since…well, since the earth cooled!” Can’t wait to keep up with the blog, and Joe, thank you for the “follow” option so I don’t have to obsessively (as in every two minutes) check to see if there is a new post or comment!
Leah, thank you for the wonderful welcome and for all the help you’ve given Amy.
Joe, thanks for giving up what little free time you have to help the rest of us “experience” the Olympics. Have a safe trip and do try to sleep once in a while!
You’re welcome of course, Michigan sister! I’m so happy that Amy decided to make the trip. And thanks for your kind words #2 sister!
Very nice new home and great intro from Leah! So excited for the festivities to start. We will be following all of the blog news closely! Unc, Leah and Amy…have a GREAT time!!!
I’m so proud of that girl!
Who would be more comfortable in the land of rain than “Duckman”. Hope you all have a great time. Leah, make sure no hooligans throw tacks in the middle of the road like what happened earlier this week in the tour de france. Amy, have fun except for the 5th. You know where you should be. Remember, fluff don’t squeeze. If anyone sees either Alex Morgan or Hope Solo tell them I say Hi.
It’s summer time so my spelling may be a little off. #1 NEPHEW
And that is why you teach Math, Ed! 🙂
Nice piece Leah – you captured the strange-sort-of-excitement that is happening right now in London. It’s a weird mix of “we don’t really care this is happening, I am so inconvenienced and I’d rather be in Greece or somewhere else” with “why didn’t I get tickets earlier”!
@ #1 NHPEEW. So your spelling is off AND you’re speaking in code? Leah is busy, so we will use Google translate for your future comments. That wasn’t blasphemous was it, Leah?
@ #1 NWHEPE, believe you me there will be a tack thrower takedown if they cross me! I got Bradley’s back. @Duckman, bring on the blasphemy – that’s what this is for, right? Hi Suzette and welcome Laura!
Joseph….you TWEET?? Is there no end to your technological know-how? I am impressed. You are just like the Kardashians!
Great. Something I always aspired to. And it took you three days to see that?
It did take me three days! I don’t have your techno-savvy skills! 🙂 At least with the Kardashians/Bruce Jenner connection, there is an Olympic link!
In case anyone’s interested, the sun is shining in London and the forecast for the 27th is partly sunny and warm-ish (26 C or 79 F). Bring it on!
Welcome back to London Donna and welcome to the blog! Thanks for bringing some Turkish sunshine and heat our way – much appreciated. Hope you had a wonderful sail!
Finally found the blog site ——thanks ,Leah —–don’t know what I was doing wrong last night but then I’m technically challenged. Have signed up for the “Follow ” postings so I should be set now. Have a ball and keep sending photos Mary Pat
And , Joe, Lopez Lomong is our go-to CNY guy ! Long wait until he hits the track but we’re ready to see him. MPK
